5 Soft Skills Everyone Needs Today
Personality has never been as important as it is today. Never in human history has a mathematical formula for your personality ever determined your qualification for a job.
100 Years ago most of Americans lived on Farms.
Most people knew the same people all their lives. Few people travelled outside of their hometowns. Walking just 10 miles to the next time would take 5 hours. That same trip today would take 10 minutes on the highway. And because traveling took so long, Meeting strangers was a rare occurence. You could be born and die in the same village. This is the case in literature of the day, in which the main characters sometimes never left their town their entire lives. [Insert Wuthering Heights].
With the dawn of the mass transit, the automobile, suburbanization, organized workforces, public education, people meet new people everyday. Everyday we are required to interact with people we don't know. This is a huge change for humans, because NEW often meant scary. New things could harm us, so we were naturally afraid of new things. This 21st century world has brought on social anxiety, shyness, and a myriad of social phobias that hardly existed 100 years ago.
We have names for all sorts of things that didn't matter before. Introvert, Extrovert, Concientious, Directing, Intuitive, Agreeable, Receptive, Shy, Outgoing, People Person, Loner, etc.. We now have personality tests, designed to weed out those who don't possess a certain personality for a job. Yep, that personality test employers make you take online can eliminate you before you even get called for an interview.
Personality has never been as important as it is today. Never in human history has a mathematical formula for your personality ever determined your qualification for a job. Never has something so abstract as Concientiousness ever held a human back in life. It used to be, if you could catch your food, you could eat. Today, dealing with others is how we catch our food. Dealing with people is how all of us make a living. Without people we'd all be unemployed. Today personality is key. We're all in the people business.
Talking about Soft Skills has become the new buzzword. It seems that taking all of those courses in college didn't matter as much as we thought. College doesn't teach us about charm, charisma, people skills, and developing our personal identity. Yet, we are painfully aware how important people skills and charm is throughout college and high school and when we leave school it seems that that's all employers talk about.
